OS X Lion exceeds 1 million downloads in first day

updated 05:05 pm EDT, Thu July 21, 2011

Long-term success hinges on Mac App Store

Over 1 million downloads of OS X Lion have been made within the space of a day, Apple has announced. "Lion is off to a great start, user reviews and industry reaction have been fantastic," claims a prepared statement by senior worldwide product marketing VP Phil Schiller. "Lion is a huge step forward, it's not only packed with innovative features but it's incredibly easy for users to update their Macs to the best OS we've ever made."

The sales may have several implications. They suggest for instance that the Mac App Store has already been adopted widely enough to be viable for major products, and that Apple has provided enough bandwidth to handle launch-day demand. Rapid adoption of Lion means that both Apple and third-party developers can produce software for the OS on the assumption a sizable market exists.

The launch has not been without problems. Some critical third-party apps are lacking compatibility, and in a few cases Snow Leopard is blocking installation. Despite solid performance overall, bandwidth at the Mac App Store has also occasionally sagged under Lion downloads.
