San Francisco law requires radiation warnings for cellphones

updated 11:25 pm EDT, Wed July 20, 2011

Packaging to include general warnings

The City of San Francisco has reportedly enacted a new law that will require radiation warnings for cellphones. Unlike an earlier law, which would have required device packaging to include radiation absorption levels, the new terms simply require retailers to post general information regarding the risks of radiation and ways to minimize bodily exposure.

The legislation comes amid years of disagreement over the possible risks associated with radiation exposure from wireless devices. So far, the scientific community lacks a consensus on the possible health effects from cellphones.

It remains unclear if the CTIA wireless consortium will oppose the latest measure. The organization filed a lawsuit that successfully prevented the SAR-level legislation from being enacted, after arguing that such laws would simply lead to confusion. [via TechCrunch]
