OLPC XO-3 to get satellite Internet, solar power

OLPC XO-3 due early next year for under $100

One Laptop Per Child's delayed XO-3 tablet for children in developing countries will get rubber covers that will not only protect the device but may also have solar chargers, satellite Internet or external keyboard connections. OLPC founder and chairman Nicholas Negroponte during an interview with PCWorld revealed that he hoped to draw more interest through the features, which are targeted at countries where power and reliable Internet access are harder to find. The device, originally announced in late 2009 and due to arrive on the market early in 2012, will be priced at under $100.

Otherwise, the XO-3 will have a camera mounted in the bezel that surrounds the display. At the bottom of the screen will be a microphone and USB 2.0 ports and a headphone jack will flank the screen as well.

As reported earlier, decisions about the display are still delaying the device. A transflective screen is planned but with better richness in e-ink and transmissive modes. A version of Pixel Qi's hybrid screen may be the top choice, and it has the ability to absorb ambient light to brighten screens and reduce power consumption.

Negroponte also said OLPC will no longer offer Windows 8 as an option for the OS, instead opting on Linux-based systems such as Android and Chrome OS. Windows 8 was ruled out because at the time of the tablet's development, Microsoft said it wouldn't support ARM chips with the software.

This tablet can be compared with Chinese democracy, the Guns and Roses album. The hype about how it was going to be the greatest album of all time , a masterpiece and look what c*** it turned out to be. The same is with this tablet. They tell us every year that it's going to get released just like the end of the world prophecies but it never happens.
