iPad supply evening out, sales beating PCs

Supply 'balance' emerging in some markets

Some regions -- though not all -- are finally achieving a "balance" between supply and demand when it comes to the iPad, Apple revealed during its third-quarter results call. Throughout the quarter the company was selling as many tablets as it could make, but in recent times the situation has stabilized. This is borne out by the shrinking of US shipping times to one to three days.

Apple now has approximately three weeks of iPads in inventory. The company is keen to emphasize, though, that Q3 iPad sales were so high as to beat out sales of new PCs. The iPad is moreover said to be cannibalizing some new Mac purchases, though Apple has not elaborated on the point.

Enterprise adoption has taken off, in defiance of usual conservativeness with new products, Apple adds. 86 percent of the Fortune 500 and 47 percent of the Global 500 are claimed to be testing or deploying iPads; some major clients include GE, Boston Scientific, Cedar Sinai Hospital, Standard Charter and Salesforce, and a variety of corporations are rolling out custom apps. Alaska Airlines and American Airlines use iPads in cockpits, Apple notes.

This performance has carried over to the educational realm, where Apple says it has sold more iPads to K-12 schools than it has Macs in a space of five quarters.

iPad production is still growing, the company mentions. It rose by 4.5 million units during Q3, and a large boost is in fact expected in the future, though again Apple would not elaborate.
