Nikon rep hints D3, D700 replacements by end of August

Nikon rep statement indicates new FX cameras due

An e-mail from a reader of NikonRumors maintains that a Nikon rep at an event promised two new FX (full-frame) bodies will be announced in August. The pair, expected to replace the D3 and D700, will ship in the fall, the rep also said. He gave no clues as to details.

At the event, Nikon also explained what the company has done since the Japanese earthquake on March 11. For one, a new production plant in Malaysia was opened up with most machines and employees moved there. The facility is now producing camera and lenses.

The new cameras will have significantly different specs, with one aimed at pro photographers and the other for experts. Many expect at least one to use a Sony-made sensor at or near 24 megapixels. At least the D700 would also get much improved light sensitivity.

Finally, the same reader claims the Nikon Coolpix line will be upgraded around the same August timeline, but with what wasn't said.
