iPad Smart Cover clone for Galaxy Tab, Samsung approved?

Anymode Smart Cover knock-off shows for Galaxy Tab

Korean company Anymode has produced a blatant copy of the iPad 2's Smart Cover for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. While it can't use magnets to wake the tablet like Apple's device, the Smart Case is otherwise a one-for-one imitation, complete with the folding, four-segment design and even five of the same colors. Its only difference is a basic shell to cover the Android tablet's back.

The Smart Case also has an unusually and potentially uncomfortably close connection to Samsung. Along with purported official Samsung certification, company chief Sang-yong Kim claims to be the nephew of Samsung chairman Kun-hee Lee. Anymode and its parent Youngbo Engineering make accessories for Samsung, such as Bluetooth peripherals and headphones.

It's possible Anymode is trying to associate itself with Samsung to gain legitimacy. Samsung hasn't commented on the apparent link.

If accurate, the presence of the Smart Case could well hurt Samsung's defense against Apple. Samsung didn't design the products itself, but its tacit approval of accessories meant to imitate iPad accessories might be useful as incidental evidence. [via 9to5]

The back cover is essential because...

Anymode needs to cover its A55.

    Anymode = Commode

Paul had it right about a** covering. Are these people really as STUPID as they sound? Remember the PC-Mac clone moron in Florida. Oh yeah, he went far.

This will seriously bolster Apple's case against Samsung, not to mention put Anymode out of business.

    well Sammy fans..

that smart cover isn't so great on the ipad... everyone I know, inlcuding myself, has gotten some other case after a couple weeks

this HAS to be a joke... really Samsung.. you couldn't even come up with different colors?

    I like my smart cover,

But then I also carry around my iPad in a case that my dad got from Staples' which was designed for a netbook. I bought a light gray one, and it's got some smudges on it so I'd recommend dark colors.

I have a question, is that a child's pair of hands in the photo here?? That tab looks huge.

There is one degree of separation between Samsung and the cover, but still, in my eyes this doesn't look good.

    imitation is one thing…

and actionable “trade dress infringements” are something else. Here, the novel method of folding is not just a pretty design, but an important part of the functionality. Blatant copy-catting it seems, but I don't envision it being actionable unless Apple somehow got away with patenting the folding of a stiff item to prop up a gizmo.

As always, Samsung and its friends steal every idea possible. These guys got no brains to think themselves.

    Copy cats

A copy cat iPad needs a copy cat Smart Cover.
