Foursquare adds notification tray to iOS app

updated 11:40 pm EDT, Thu July 14, 2011

Debuted on Android last week

The popular check-in app Foursquare (free) brought its new notification tray feature to the iOS version of its app, having made the feature available on the Android version last week. The iPhone version also sports the new check-in format, a feature that has not yet migrated to the Android version.

Foursquare users are automatically "checked-in" at stores and places they visit, which can be used to alert friends of nearby acquaintances, arrange meet-ups or share tips and comments, and deliver coupons and specials to users as they enter businesses (or attract them to also visit nearby businesses). Frequent visitors to a specific location are dubbed the "mayor" of the location and may quality for additional benefits.

The new version also includes offers from LivingSocial, GiltCity and others, and spruces up the new layout and UI introduced in the previous version.
