Sony Ericsson Xperia duo superphone leaks again

updated 06:45 am EDT, Wed July 13, 2011

Xperia duo, dual-core 1.4Ghz plus 1.5GB RAM

A clearer press shot and more details have leaked about the forthcoming Sony Ericsson Xperia duo, dual-core superphone. The phone is expected to be Sony Ericsson's first dual-core smartphone, which is said to be clocked at 1.4GHz. The processor is also expected to be paired with 1.5GB of RAM, making it one of the most powerful smartphones yet.

Candidates for supplying the ARM-based processor are ST-Ericsson or Qualcomm. ST-Ericsson have the NovaThor A9500 and U850, which could power the device. Qualcomm's MSM8260 silicon is also a real possibility.

The large 4.5-inch display will be a higher pixel density qHD type similar to that currently used on the Motorola Atrix and Milestone 3; although at 4-inches, the displays on the Motorola phones will retain a high overall pixel density. The Sony Ericsson will, however, be enhanced with its Mobile Bravia technology that offer better contrast and definition.

On the rear is a high-spec 12-megapixel camera with a second-generation Exmor CMOS sensor optimized for taking photos in low light situations. It will also incorporate a high-capacity 2500mAh battery (which it will need to power the processor and large display and still offer decent battery life).

Rumors suggest that the Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) running superphone could be released as early as this September. However, even if Sony Ericsson launches the device at that time, it can take several months for supplies to reach stores from the time of any official announcement. [via Phone Arena]
