Motorola rumored making iPad-ratio tablet with 2048x1536 LCD

Motorola may have Retina Display tablet with ICS

A new rumor has maintained that Motorola will take a more iPad-like approach for its next tablet. The company would drop the widescreen ratio of the Xoom in favor of a 4:3 ratio. Prototypes supposedly out in the field seen by Fudzilla's source would even have the 2048x1536 Retina Display-like resolution that Apple has been preparing for.

The slate is expected to be "significantly thinner" than the relatively thick Xoom and would run Ice Cream Sandwich, which some see as Android 4.0. Google's new OS is built mostly to bring Android 3 features to every device but will also have its own features, such as intelligent face tracking.

It was implied by the tip that the tablet would most likely be ready by 2012, although a chance existed the unnamed design would be ready before the end of 2011. Motorola may be waiting on NVIDIA's Kal-El (Tegra 3) to get the quad-core processor and faster graphics needed to drive the higher resolution.

The rumor is unconfirmed but comes on the heels of a muted Xoom launch. Motorola has been held up as a cornerstone of Android tablets but has been criticized for a number of key design flaws, including a widescreen ratio that makes it awkward to hold in portrait mode as well as a thicker and heavier design built more to compete with the original iPad than the iPad 2. A 4:3 ratio would draw inevitable direct iPad comparisons but also have a more natural layout and improve certain tasks, such as magazine reading and games.

    Yet another android tablet

With this rate of flooding the market with failed android tablet of all sort, they will never establish a legacy in their product. What we see now is more than 300 androids products on the market with none getting support a year after being release. Motorola/HTC/Samsung should stop making new stuff and begin to offer a real support to their existing users, this is how you built customer fidelity. Apple know how it work, and still making the first iPad a good resale value for anyone who got one.

    Got news for you all

I'll bet Apple has a prototype with the same screen too. But it's isn't coming until at least next year, probably the year after that.

There you go again, now Apple INVENTED the 4:3 ratio, and baptized it iSomething...

    Dear iPeople i'ts called XGA.

And, actually for a device said to be aimed at the media consumption market it's not the best ratio. The wide screen TV on your home proves this.

This is plain to see even on Steve's iPad 1 introduction, when again he advertises a product's deficiency as a virtue. Check out the introduction videos, Steve plays a portion of Pixar's "UP" full screen - with two thick top and bottom bars and then proceeds to double tap the screen and the film gets cropped to the XGA ratio.

Of course on a wide-screen device films are never never distorted or cropped.
The balance and weight distribution associated to the wide-screen format, and mentioned to be negatives on non 3:4 tablets, is just plain bu*l cr*p.

The Xoom has downdides, but the screen is clearly not one; h*** at 1280X800- WXGA (one full Megapixel) vs 1024X768 - XGA (786 Kilopixels)the Xoom has quite a few more pixels than either iPad, even thou the Xoom is a first generation device. Even on the iPad 2 the screen was not updated.

The screen is better and the aspect ratio for a media consumption device is also better PERIOD.

    Stick with 16:10 or 16:9...

Apple is stuck with 4:3 becuase of the Apps in her iPhone. I would rather have an HD landscape oriented tablet.

    Instead of aping Apple...

come up with Full HD with 1920x1080 or 1.5 Full HD at 2880x1620. 16:9 is the future and not 4:3 is the future. Android tablets are more of a retail and marketing failure rather than a technical failure.
