Apple snaps up, domains

Company unexpectedly slow in picking up addresses

Apple quietly acquired the rights to two important domains earlier this week, a report notes. The central one is, which switched its whois information from Whois Privacy Services to Apple on July 11th. Still outside of Apple's control are similarly-numbered domains, such as and onward.

The other acquired domain is, a reference to Apple's long-delayed tone option for the iPhone 4. Apple appears to have been unexpectedly slow in acquiring the addresses, since white iPhone 4s have been available since late April, and the original black model shipped on June 24th last year. A next-generation iPhone is likely to be announced in September.

By contrast Apple acquired in 2007, and comparatively quickly after the product's launch. The move is believed to have cost the company a substantial amount of money, in excess of $1 million.     Apple may have snapped these domains up, but I'd like someone to actually try to detail how these are 'important' domains. iPhone4 is nearing it's lifecycle, and I can't see how is getting many requests. And since the white iphone is more of a niche device, wouldn't the domain be much more important for apple to grab control of?
