Offers onboard and web-driven music, sharing
AOL Music's Play app, originally launched for Android, will be coming to iOS devices tomorrow, TechCrunch's MG Siegler has learned, offering not only compatibility with the device's local iTunes library, but also opportunities to stream full CD releases, share recommendations on social networks and content on the service itself, listen to Shoutcast streaming radio, an exclusive MP3 feed and bonus music from events such as the SXSW festival.
The app, which will be free, will bring users the option of listening to full albums and alerting others to what users are listening to via Twitter or Facebook. Users can also access their own local music library without leaving the app, replacing the built-in iPod player if preferred. Bonus music from AOL and festivals will also be made available. Friends can follow each other on the service and receive notifications about what they are listening to or recommending.
The Android version of the app, which was launched in March, has received over 1,500 generally-positive reviews, with praise increasing as newer versions came out. For the iOS version, the local player has been reworked. The app works with both Wi-Fi and 3G data. The developers sent Siegler the information on the iOS version via Instagram pictures, positioning themselves as a trendy alternative to existing iOS apps like SoundTracking. [via TechCruch]
