Pegatron rumored joining in on iPad 3 production

updated 07:20 am EDT, Mon July 11, 2011

Pegatron may be second contractor for iPad 3

Apple may take on a second contractor to make the iPad 3, according to industry rumors Monday. Pegatron, already in line to build iPhone 5s, is considered a frontrunner to build the tablets along with original producer Foxconn. The wake of the Foxconn Chengdu blast has led Apple to look at a second producer, Digitimes heard.

The same tips reiterated plans that would have the new model ship either in late summer or early fall, with Apple's production of all iPad lines estimated to hit about 13 million in the summer.

Rumors persist of an upgraded iPad 2 or complimentary model, such as an iPad HD, that would serve as a companion to what Apple has done so far. Most have had it coming with a higher resolution display, possibly a Retina Display-like 2048x1536. One has suggested it might be built for pro-level apps, such as a mobile equivalent to Aperture.

Doubts still persist. Apple has never had two truly separate, modern iOS devices running side by side and instead tends to keep an older model around, such as the iPhone 3GS or a decision to keep one second-generation iPod touch around in late 2009. A 2048x1536 display would also need more performance than what Apple has now and would probably need quad-core graphics and possibly a matching processor to reach the higher resolution while still running as smoothly as the iPad 2.
