HP preempts iCloud with Play sync beta for webOS, Mac, PC

updated 04:25 pm EDT, Mon July 11, 2011

HP Play music syncing enters beta

HP launched an early strike at iCloud this weekend with the quiet rollout of a beta for HP Play. The music syncing service lets users stream their music collections both from webOS devices such as the TouchPad as well as Macs and Windows PCs. The desktop app is based on the open Songbird app and will even serve as an iTunes equivalent, importing music from Apple's app and syncing webOS hardware over USB.

As a tweak to an existing app, it still allows playlists, mastering or ripping audio CDs.

HP hasn't said when it anticipates the service being finalized.

Cloud syncing has been one of the selling points of the TouchPad but has so far been in a largely unfinished state since HP detailed its plans. Play may be key to its strategy since it now not only has to support webOS but compete against iCloud, iTunes in the Cloud, and iTunes Match. Google is also in the early stages with its Music Beta and Videos apps. [via PreCentral]

    Too bad is right!

Not only do people not own WebOS devices (yeah, Pre and Pixi fans, I guess there are a few left, whatever), but does HP have a deal with the music labels?

I'm thinking the labels will get all cranky when they discover HP is storing music people already purchased. They just can't stand it if you choose to store your music where you want to store it.

Even then, HP doesn't sell music, do they? I think this would also decrease the draw of using a service like this. With Apple, Amazon, or Google, you can at least use your library to find and buy new music related to your tastes.
