Review: Dell XPS 15z and the MacBook Pro question

updated 05:55 pm EDT, Sun July 10, 2011

We review the Dell XPS 15z

Dell has often been associated with capable but often workhorse systems, but it has regularly tried to go after the premium audience dominated by Apple: the Adamo line was a clear shot across the bow of the MacBook Air, for example. It's coming back to this arena in a very different way with the XPS 15z, a 15.6-inch system that promises more of the style of a Mac (in this case the MacBook Pro) with a mainstream price. We'll gauge in our XPS 15z review whether it's successful as a Windows notebook and whether it might collect a few would-be or current Mac users along the way.

    Um what?

Does it run OS X? Then why in God's name would a Mac user even consider it? Stop wasting time writing stupid comparisons that have no real-world relevance.

    So...

It's almost as good as a MacBook Pro, but it is almost as expensive. $1400 vs. $1700. The MacBook Pro has a better processor (i7 vs i5) and graphics. And, according to your article, better battery life. I like this model because it shows there's no Apple Tax: You build a machine on the same plane as Apple, and you charge Apple's prices.

You can buy this same system for less than $1000 with less memory, lower grade processor, etc., but when you bring up Dell's webpage, it automatically selects the second to most expensive model for you. Add a few options, and the Mac looks like a bargain.

At its starting price, a MacBook Air is more responsive than the Dell MBP wannabe

    Dell runs Windows, no sale

The Dell has one big flaw, it's running Windows. Makes it a no sale, full of adware, spyware, and viruses that everyone is fed up with now. The Mac has none of that and the quality and service that Apple gives users is far beyond anything Dell can do or wants to do.

    Windows 7

Let's not knock a product for running Windows 7. Windows 7 is a solid operating system. In many ways, Windows 7 is more secure than Mac OSX or Linux. Windows is also a bigger target, so it still experiences more malware attacks. However, even so, malware is now moving to easier targets: Windows XP is still out there, and more malware is attacking security issues in JPGs, PDF, Shockwave, and Android.

Look I'm a very definition of an Apple Fanboi: We have four Macbook Pros, one iMac, an iPad, and several iPods. When I have non-Apple computers, I usually run Linux or BSD Unix. I have only one Windows 7 machine in my house, and it's my TV. However, despite my obvious biases, I appreciate Windows 7 and how it works. I see a great improvement in the security of the OS, and how Microsoft is now in the forefront of handling security issues. It's way different from the old XP days when Microsoft thought it had the world on a string.

By the way, Apple has serious issues with security. When an issue is discovered (and many times the same issue is discovered in both Linux and Mac OS X since they use many of the same basic libraries), it can take months before it is patched. As Mac OS X grows, and as more young people use Mac OS X, it will start having more malware attacks. Apple really needs to buckle down and handle these issues. Apple's saving grace right now is that Mac OS X is till less than 10% of what's out there, and it's not really used for corporate computing. As that changes, Apple will have to pick up the slack, or end up with Windows XP's reputation.

    Again..

Remember that Dell computer announced as "the thinness laptop in the world" and it wasn't even thiner as the macbook pro? at the end, they put a legend in very small font "every other laptop in the world except for the Macs, Asus and SOny.."
What market is DELL focussing? People who can't read?

    re: so....

Um, and yet you ignore the second video port, the USB 3 ports, the three USB ports, the eSata port. Oh, I know. The Mac has Thunderbolt, which will make all those ports so outdated. That is, once Thunderbolt devices and cables actually start to appear, which might be, who knows, this year at some point.

And it has wireless display, but I'm sure that's just something no one uses, unlike firewire or thunderbolt.

In this article the description is very clear and helpful. It describes everything clearly. I enjoyed the article very much. I also have read a article about this topic here "http://www.techyv.com/article/check-out-new-dell-xps-15" which is very helpful also.
