iPad 2 ship times shrink to 3-5 days

iPad 2 supply finally catching up to demand

Apple gave clues its iPad 2 supply was finally catching up to demand Friday after shrinking the shipping lead times at the online Apple Store to three to five days. The faster delivery applies to all 3G and Wi-Fi models. Shipping times on the tablets had been at one to two weeks since mid-April.

The slate was almost immediately backlogged on launch, even after Apple prevented pre-orders to guarantee enough supply for a retail release. Company officials have already said they were selling every model they could make and that production ramping, not a lack of interest, was the determining factor.

Apple's supply troubles have mostly repeated the same pattern seen with the original iPad. Last year, it took four months to reach same-day shipping, with most of the improvement only coming in the last few weeks of the timeframe. The iPad 2 is selling in much higher volumes than the original and, with a reduction in ship times, could see much higher sales during the summer.

Leaked estimates have put summer iPad shipments as high as 14 million, roughly three times as many as the 4.69 million Apple delivered at the start of the year.
