Facebook Vibes code hints at Spotify tie-in coming soon

updated 09:35 pm EDT, Thu July 7, 2011

Facebook Vibes may point to Spotify downloads

An expedition into the plugin code for Facebook's video chat by Jeff Rose has found possible clues as to Spotify integration coming soon. Along with calling on the actual Facebook app, Peep, it also goes to an unknown Vibes app. The component doesn't appear to be connected to the Skype-based video and is supposed to link to a "MusicDownloadDialog" box that serves as the giveaway of the plans.

A chance exists that the music service is using another partnership or is entirely Facebook-run. No rumors exist of such plans outside of Spotify, though, and its imminent US launch has lent credence to the idea. Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg mentioned that there would be a whole summer of announcements from his company and could have news within weeks.

Any Spotify tie-in would most likely involve a persistent player and sharing components. If it goes ahead, it's not expected to be a direct competitor to Amazon MP3 or iTunes, as MySpace Music was, but instead a possible edge over Rdio, Rhapsody, Slacker, and other streaming services with a subscription for on-demand listening.

Facebook has made periodic attempts at increasing the importance of music and had its best-known success when iLike gained importance, up until it was bought out by MySpace in 2009.
