Apple says App Store downloads hit 15 billion

App Store at 15b as iPad hits 100k native apps

Apple on Thursday hit another milestone as the App Store passed 15 billion downloads. The figure comes just half a year after reaching 10 billion. Apple also confirmed that it had passed 100,000 native iPad apps, or nearly a quarter of the total 425,000 iOS app base.

""In just three years, the revolutionary App Store has grown to become the most exciting and successful software marketplace the world has ever seen," Senior VP Phil Schiller said.

The figure has Apple's App Store downloads continuing to accelerate: a third of its entire download history, five billion apps, has taken place in just the past six months. About one billion of those arrived in the past month. Apple has always stressed that the downloads are genuinely new downloads and not updates or re-downloads to a new device.

Reaching 100,000 iPad apps is a symbolic hit to rival tablet makers that have often had trouble getting developers to write apps for their platforms. The BlackBerry PlayBook still has just a few hundred apps. Google has made it difficult to identify which Android apps are truly tablet-native, but it's believed to be well under 1,000.
