Sony S1 and S2 tablets get second look

updated 11:40 am EDT, Wed July 6, 2011

Sony S1, S2 tablets shown off in Italy

A second hands-on look at Sony's upcoming Android-powered tablets has been published by NotebookItalia. It comes about a week after the first look and sheds some more light on the devices. Both run on ARM processors and Android 3.0 and get 3G/4G radios for connecting to cellular networks.

The S1 gets an IR transmitter that allows it to act as a universal remote for home electronics. This is useful as the tablet is also DLNA-compatible, so users can stream multimedia content to compatible home theater devices without having to touch their original remotes.

On the software side, Sony will have its Qriocity service available on the tablets and the S2 has PlayStationSuite preloaded and lets users play PlayStation One games. E-books can be purchased from the Reader Store.

While prices weren't yet finalized as per a spokesperson, it is believed the S1 will cost 599 euros (about $860) and the S2 will cost 649 euros ($930). North American prices are likely to be lower than those equivalents, however.
