Google Videos for phones briefly shows in Android Market

Google Videos for Android pops up early

Google's Videos app is near reaching phones as Android users have reported briefly finding the app in Android Market late Friday. The app as it was seen didn't enable actual playback but was clearly optimized for phones. The app was promised getting support beyond tablets a few weeks after its Google I/O conference introduction but has never seen indications of an expansion until now.

Whether or not the app works on all Android devices isn't evident. One demo (below) had it working on a Nexus S, which is virtually required to get support. A splintered copy protection scheme on Android 2.x makes commercial video more difficult as the protection often has to vary from device to device. Netflix, for example, only sees several phones.

The Videos app primarily gives access to movie rentals and is one of the first for Android to give access to very recent titles. iOS has a limited selection of devices but, because of this, has meant that Apple, Netflix, and other app developers could write an app once and know that almost all iPads, iPhones, and iPod touch players could see it.
