Sony “Ultimate Mobile PC” to be unveiled as revamped Vaio Z?

updated 05:40 am EDT, Sun June 26, 2011

All-new Sony Vaio Z rumored to land next week

Detailed pictures (embedded below) that are claimed to be Sony's revamped Vaio Z have surfaced on a Chinese website. The notebook in the photos features an external docking station and appears to be the ultraportable notebook Sony teased as the "Ultimate Mobile PC" in April. While Sony provided no official details at the time, its rumored specifications suggested that the external docking station also housed a discrete graphics card.

The leaked specifications of the would-be all-new Vaio Z included suggestions that a second-generation Core i7 processor would power it, an SSD would be standard, along with HDMI 1.4, and Intel's WiDi (Wireless Display) tech. With the optical drive included in the docking station, the 13.3-inch device would weigh in at just 2.5-pounds.

The docking station would help to transform the notebook into a powerful desktop replacement. It is thought to incorporate a AMD Radeon HD 6700M (Whistler-XT), a Blu-ray burner, and an array of expansion options with Ethernet, VGA and Sony's implementation of Intel's Thunderbolt I/O.
The new Vaio Z is expected to land as early as next week.
