Enables wireless syncing for devices

[Updated with additional details] The second private beta of iOS 5 has been released by Apple on their iOS developer website along with a second beta of iTunes 10.5, needed to test the major new feature in the iOS beta: wireless syncing. The company also released a second beta of AppleTV 2.0 software, and a second developer preview of XCode 4.2, AppleInsider reports.

The build number on the new iOS beta is 9A5248D and comes in a total of nine distributions -- three for the iPad 2 (Wi-Fi only, GSM, CDMA), one for the original iPad, two for the iPhone 4 (GSM and CDMA), one for the iPhone 3GS, and two for the iPod Touch (third or fourth generation). The iOS 5 beta is said to also include a revised Webkit that adds a new CSS property called WebKit Overflow Scrolling, and a new version of iMessage that is not backward-compatible with the previous beta's version of iMessage.

Developers who want to try out the wireless syncing must first update to the new beta for iTunes 10.5, which requires a Mac running the pre-release version of Lion or OS X 10.6.8. They would then install the iOS 5 beta 2 software, whereupon the wireless sync option becomes available when the devices are connected (via cable) to the Mac running iTunes. Developers are cautioned that once installed, devices running the iOS 5 beta can only be upgraded to later betas and the final version, and cannot be downgraded back to earlier versions.

Future beta releases of iOS 5 may be delivered over-the-air (OTA) as well as through site downloads as the wireless sync option spreads among developers.

The AppleTV 2.0 beta is said to further improve Airplay between it and mobile devices, while the new preview of XCode 4.2 (offered in two separate builds for Snow Leopard and Lion) includes updates to both the iOS 5 and Lion software development kits. [via AppleInsider]
