Brings a clay-like sculpting experience to artists
Pixologic, well known for their 3D software ZBrush, have introduced Sculptris 3D as a ground-level sculpting solution for artists who want to create art without learning the technical aspects of the software right away. The program uses dynamic tessellation to create a clay-like 3D surface that users can manipulation as they would real clay -- pinching, twisting and shaping the form into the desired result.
Tesselation adds triangles to the undelying geometry, creating a more realistic shaping and textural experience. Creations made in Sculptris can easily be moved to ZBrush for finishing, and those comfortable with ZBrush can toggle off the Sculptris controls and use a ZBrush-like interface instead. In addition to the sculpting focus, the program also has a Paint mode where creations can then be texture mapped using brush stokes.
The program is offered for free in exchange for some contact and survey information. For the Mac, Sculptris 3D requires a Intel Mac (Core 2 Duo, 2GHz or higher) running OS X 10.5 or higher and an ATI or NVidia card with OpenGL 2.0 support. The program is compatible with Wacom and similar graphics tablets. [via Architosh]
