Scoble talks rich Nanosys LCD tech, iPad 3 Retina Displays

Nanosys readies quantum dot LCD displays

Nanosys in a fresh set of tours, one with Robert Scoble, has shown a new display technology that could dramatically improve the color accuracy of LCDs, particularly in mobile. A quantum dot film layer, made of iridium phosphide, eliminates the bias towards blue on usual LED backlighting and expands the color range by as much as 50 percent by shifting more of the emphasis to red and green. The approach has a print-like process and, along with its passive nature, means it won't raise the price of a display or take away from the battery life.

The technology is due to ship later this year, although Nanosys hasn't named customers. Any device from smartphones through to tablets and TVs should be compatible. Company CEO Jason Hartlove showed iPads with the technology grafted in, although it's not believed this was a confirmation of Apple using the technology itself.

Separately, however, the Rackspace blogger also added to beliefs Apple was working on a 2048x1536 display for the next iPad. His sources had been mentioning Apple implementing a "double-pixel" display on the future tablet for "months." Not much else was said, although Apple isn't expected to unveil such a tablet until early 2012.

Apple has been upgrading art assets in iBooks, its iOS 5 Twitter integration, and other areas in anticipation of a higher resolution display. The upgrade is only likely to wait until Apple has quad-core processors and graphics due to the performance overhead needed for what would amount to four times the resolution.
