Leak reaffirms iPhone 5 plans, claims 33% higher-res iPad 3

iPhone 5 locked for Sept, followed by iPad 3

A fresh round of leaks early Wednesday supported Apple's plans for the next iPhone but also had unusual details about a future iPad. The tips had the new iPhone in September with the expected dual-core A5 chip and eight-megapixel camera. As expected, Bloomberg understood it was meant to coincide with iOS 5, although they saw it as a more conservative iPhone 4-like design than the major remake suggested by some.

A cheaper iPhone was still in the works that would be closely related to the iPhone 4 and, supposedly, target developing countries. Whether this was the rumored smaller iPhone or just a lower-cost model wasn't known for certain. Apple has historically just taken the existing phone and reduced the capacity, if necessary, to hit a lower price target.

The iPad, unusually, may not necessarily get the 2048x1536 resolution hinted by Apple's own code. It would instead have a resolution 33 percent higher, or about 1366x1024, and get a "more responsive" touch display. No ship date had been given for the iPad, hint it was more likely to hit the anticipated early 2012 release rather than support rumors of an early unveiling.

A step of the sort would be unusual for Apple. Its iOS scaling has usually dictated that resolutions be exactly quadruple in order to preserve the scaling for legacy apps, such as the leap from 320x480 on the iPhone 3GS to 640x960 on the iPhone 4. Apple would need to either have a more dynamic scaling mechanism or have developers re-optimize apps for the new resolution.

Is this rumour nonsense going to go on three times a day until September?

If the iPad screen is 1366 tall, to maintain the 4:3 ratio (which Apple will assuredly keep), it would have to be 1024.5 pixels tall, which is impossible. This rumor is made up. If they said it would be 1536x1152, I might believe them.

Iphone 4 style is the best

It would be a major step back if they went back to a 3gs style. The boxee style iphone4 is great. You can stand it up also without worrying about it tipping over. It's a great design.
