RIM reportedly already laying off employees

RIM starts cutting jobs soon after poor quarter

RIM may have taken swift action on its promise of job cuts as early reports on Tuesday have hinted at the first layoff notices. At least some employees of the BlackBerry designer said they had been given notice just after arriving at work. As many as 200 would have been let go, Waterloo's local Record newspaper said.

No reports have come so far of cuts from RIM's other key offices, such as a core software team in Ottawa. Officials hadn't commented on whether job cuts were taking place.

RIM said during its latest results call that a "headcount reduction" was coming. The company's CEOs spun the cuts as necessary following fast growth and a need to tune for its best opportunities. Most, however, have seen them as reflections of rapidly sinking market share and now phone shipments that have pushed RIM into cost-cutting to optimize its business.

Sales have been hurt at RIM both from its faster-moving Android and iOS competition but also strategic decisions with limited resources. A decision to chase after the iPad with the BlackBerry PlayBook may have set back the launch of BlackBerry 7 and consequently every phone using the new OS, starting with the Bold 9900.

    Layoffs that fast

Just for that I will never and I repeat never buy a RIM product. This POS company, has those 2 clowns running the show and those not necessarily responsible due to bad management.

I feel bad for those employees who probably busted their but for this company. And I say this because I have seen how this company operates. And for that I say to all, go for an iOS or Android product. And if necessary and you don't want to go either way, go with Windows Phone 7. But avoid Blackberry so those POS double-headed dragons, can take the majority fall. And to the shareholders, vote those POS bone-headed twins out and possibly take the company back and strip them of everything they have in RIM. They don't deserve to leave or sell RIM just so they can save their buts.

    Yes, that fast

Which is more cruel? Laying people off right after you said you would do it, or waiting 6 weeks and in the process making everyone p*** their pants while waiting to find out what's going on? It's a real morale destroyer to have this kind of thing hanging over your head every day as you go to work. I'm shocked that they waited over a weekend before they handed out notices; can you imagine what kind of a weekend every RIM employee had?

As well, it's popular to rag on Mike and Jim, and admittedly they have not done a great job on the marketing and planning end. But do keep in mind that 12000 or so people around the world owe their monthly paycheques to them. I certainly couldn't imagine remortgaging my home, sleeping in my car at times, and driving around every day, being rejected by business after business, until enough customers bought my products so I could feed my family. Their huge risk has created over ten thousand jobs, the Perimeter Institute, and a huge number of university scholarships and community investments. I'm not saying that your criticism is unwarranted, but let's show a bit of respect for people who have actually had huge and tangible effects on society.

    Only themselves to blame

It happened to Palm, and now it's happening to RIM. They failed to adapt while the world around them changed. Complacency and denial are killers.
