LaCie intros CloudBox hybrid LAN/cloud storage device

updated 01:30 pm EDT, Tue June 21, 2011

Box automatically uploads to the cloud

LaCie has unveiled its latest device, the CloudBox, which aims to bridge the gap between cloud-based and network-attached storage. The backup box provides just 100GB of local storage, however it automatically uploads the content to LaCie's online storage service. The system is designed to eliminate the need for a computer to be constantly uploading content to the cloud, a process that can prove slow when transferring large amounts of data across consumer-level broadband connections.

Content that is uploaded to LaCie's online storage can then be accessed from any computer with an Internet connection. Data can be separated into ten different versions, enabling users to recover old versions of changing files such as documents.

For security, all data is processed using 128-bit AES encryption before it leaves the CloudBox on its way to the cloud servers.

The CloudBox will cost $200, which includes a free year of LaCie's online service. After the free trial, however, users must dish out $100 per year for the online backup. [via CNET]
