Verizon to launch LTE-based 4G in several new cities July 21

updated 01:30 pm EDT, Tue June 21, 2011

Accererating its roll out plan

Verizon has announced its next round of cities where it will be rolling out its 4G LTE wireless services. On July 21, the company will be adding 13 new urban areas to the 74 markets where it already offers coverage. The company appears to be accelerating the speed at which it is deploying coverage.

Earlier this year, Verizon had announced plans to have 4G in place in 145 markets by the end of this year. The company is now claiming that it will actually have service in place in over 175 markets.

The new markets to be added by July 21, will include Augusta, Georgia; Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina; Springfield, Massachusetts; Wichita, Kansas; and Knoxville, Tennessee.

This month, Verizon added 21 cities including Milwaukee and Madison in Wisconsin and Harrisburg in Pennsylvania, among others.

Verizon claims that 4G on average offers downward data rates of up to 12Mbps and 5Mbps on the uplink, 10 times faster than its current 3G wireless speeds.

The company intends to have fully covered its 3G network map with 4G by the end of 2013.
