updated 12:40 pm EDT, Mon June 20, 2011

Over 177k e-mails said to be taken

A team of hackers has claimed responsibility for yet another attack aimed at Sony. The duo, which is said to include a Lebanese student and a French associate, claims to have utilized a method known as SQL injection to breach the Sony Pictures France website and gain access to the company's internal correspondence. Over 177,000 e-mails were allegedly copied, though just 70 were consequently published on Pastebin.

One of the individuals also claimed responsibility for successful attacks against several of the company's other websites, including Sony Ericsson, Sony Europe and Sony Portugal.

Sony has been targeted in a long list of hacking attempts spanning several months, as several groups, including LulzSec, appear to have repeatedly gained access to the company's systems. The most significant breach resulted in an extended shutdown of the PlayStation Network system, a consequence that is said to have cost the company approximately $171 million.

The hackers claiming responsibility for the Sony Pictures France attack suggest they will not release the full set of copied e-mails. [via CNET]
