New MacBook Air may drop to $899, black cast in doubt

MacBook Air may cost less but stay silver

More follow-ups have surfaced surrounding the upcoming MacBook Air. One anonymous source corroborated most of the earlier details but would have the price cut down to $899. Details weren't narrowed down by 9to5, though SSD costs if so would likely rule out more than the existing 64GB drive at that price.

The individual tip hasn't been validated but might be feasible based on the processor switch. Apple no longer needs to have a dedicated NVIDIA chipset or to use Intel processors that would otherwise have been discontinued.

A price cut would be rare for Apple, which hasn't had a system selling for $899 new since the iBook G4. Apple may be counting on the cut for a sharp spike in sales as the company looks to turn the Air into a popularized system closer to the success of the iPad.

Along with the price discussion, a separate but more established contact wasn't certain about the existence of a black version. New materials didn't necessarily rule it out but also showed no mention of anything beyond the usual silver.
