LulzSec brings down UK government site in political campaign

updated 04:45 pm EDT, Mon June 20, 2011

Group teams with Anonymous to take down sites

Hacker group LulzSec has continued to cause trouble for government websites, today claiming to have taken down the UK's Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) website. "Tango down - soca.gov.uk," the group posted on its Twitter feed. The tweet also made a reference to "Operation Anti-Security," a campaign that aims to oppose alleged corruption in business and government.

"As we're aware, the government and whitehat security terrorists across the world continue to dominate and control our Internet ocean," LulzSec said in a statement. "Sitting pretty on cargo bays full of corrupt booty, they think it's acceptable to condition and enslave all vessels in sight."

The hackers have also announced that they will be collaborating with a like-minded group, Anonymous, to bolster the 'AntiSec' endeavors. Both groups have been credited with organizing a range of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, crippling several websites affiliated with businesses and government agencies.

"Top priority is to steal and leak any classified government information, including email spools and documentation," LulzSec outlined in its call-to-arms statement. "Prime targets are banks and other high-ranking establishments."

Spanish police recentlyarrested three individuals believed to be affiliated with Anonymous and responsible for at least one of the recent PlayStation Network security breaches. Investigators claim to have perused chat logs to help identify the group's leaders, however the organization is said to be composed of several independent teams working anonymously in different countries.
