Cloud Engines voluntarily recalls Pogoplug Video units

updated 11:00 pm EDT, Fri June 17, 2011

Recall based on two overheating reports

Cloud Engines, makers of the popular Pogoplug line of accessories, has issued a voluntary recall of its Pogoplug Video hardware product. The issue involves the advanced processing chip that processes video in real time -- the company has received at least two reports of the chip overheating, leading to safety issues (despite the presence of a fan in the product). None of the other Pogoplug products are affected, as none of them use the same processing chip.

The Pogoplug Video is a "personal cloud" media-sharing device that allows users to connect USB hard drives and then transcodes them and streams them to mobile devices. Users who own a Pogoplug Video unit are advised by the company to safely eject their hard drives from it and unplug the device immediately. Once unplugged, users should email the company for further instructions.

The company is working with the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission and is expected to refund the purchase price paid by claimants. The Pogoplug Video normally sold for $199.
