Interweaving content on PCs, tablets, phones & TV
The BBC is looking to more closely integrate the content it provides and the technology through which it is delivered. This strategy was outlined by their Director of Future Media in a BBC blog today. One way the BBC plans to do it is with dual screen companion devices, that provide supplemental information to augment what's being broadcast over the TV screen.
In his blog, Ralph Rivera, the Director of Future Media at the BBC discussed how the public service broadcasting organization has been refocusing its online efforts, to encompass "four screens:" PCs, tablets, phones, and TVs.
"We see the emergence of a post-PC world," Rivera said, "and we are embracing it as an opportunity to reach our audiences on whatever 'piece of glass' they choose to use, with an experience appropriate for each device."
The BBC, as part of its strategy, will continue experimenting with delivering content on one event via two devices simultaneously. The broadcaster first trialed this concept in October with the TV show Autumnwatch. During that experiment, viewers of the popular TV show were able to receive added synchronized information through a companion website simultaneously.
