RIM COO takes leave of absence

updated 04:15 pm EDT, Thu June 16, 2011

Medical reasons given for departure

Research in Motion, the maker of BlackBerry smartphones and tablets, announced that its COO Don Morrison is taking a leave of absence. The company gave medical reasons for his leaving. It expects him to return to the position in the fall.

The company also said that former COO Larry Conlee has returned to the company in an advisory capacity, but didn't give any specifics.

There has been some speculation that Morrison, who has been with the company for ten years, might be leaving leaving for reasons other than health, but these have not been substantiated. The timing of the announcement of his departure, just one day before the company releases financial results for last quarter, has also generated many questions. [via Business Insider]
