Motorola: unlocked Android bootloaders hinge on carriers

Motorola Android bootloaders depend on carriers

Motorola's timing for its unlocked Android bootloader policy will depend primarily on carriers, mobile software VP Christy Wyatt mentioned in a follow-up. The carriers have to test the changes both for basic compatibility but also to make sure they meet security standards, she explained to AusDroid.

There wasn't likely to be much resistance, Wyatt said. Carriers had been happy with the built-in unlockability for the 3G version of the Xoom, and the method used for the Android tablet would be the same used for the upcoming smartphone changes.

Updates to unlock the bootloader should come for Android hardware that was scheduled to get an update in the second half of the year. Many of its recent devices this year could get the update, but it's not clear how many of these will be US-specific models. The Photon 4G won't come with unlocked firmware from the start but hasn't been ruled out for an update later.

The call for an unlocked bootloader has grown loud as users have wanted to customize the firmware or otherwise go beyond official code. It lets users newer versions of Android than what Motorola can offer. strip out Motorola's interface and bring in things that even Android wouldn't normally allow.
