Apple update resolves 'quit during setup' issue

Apple and Microsoft today issued updates for two long-standing products; in the case of Apple, it has updated Airport Utility for Mac and Windows to version 5.5.3 to fix a crashing issue. Microsoft has updated Office for Mac 2004, 2008 and 2011 to address security vulnerabilities as well as bug fixes and enhancements to the suites.

The Apple Airport Utility update corrects a problem where the software, which is used to set up and modify settings on all Airport and Time Capsule units, would crash during the setup process. For Mac, the update is 10.8MB in size and requires OS X 10.5.7 or later. For Windows, the update is 10.1MB in size and requires Windows XP SP3 or later, Vista SP2 or later or Windows 7 SP1 or later.

The Microsoft Office update comes in response to security bulletin MS11-045, and addresses eight privately-reported vulnerabilities that could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially-crafted Excel file. The attacker would gain the same user rights as the logged-in user. The vulnerability affects all versions of Excel going back to 2002 on both platforms, and also affects programs from Microsoft that can read Excel data (such as the Open XML File Format Converter for Mac, along with the other programs in Office).

The patch for Office for Mac 2004 and 2008 addresses only the security issues, while the Office 2011 patch also includes enhancements to Outlook and Word. Specifically, the 2011 update for Word improves reliability for Japanese users typing in the Hiragana input mode, along with stability improvements that prevent crashing when users try to open items from the Template Gallery and when using Advanced Find and Replace.

For Outlook, the update improves the reliability of Free/Busy statuses for users in the Perth (Australia) time zone, fixes issues that sometimes caused delegate information to be lost when changes were made to account settings, or user certificates were added or removed, as well as address an issue that blocked users from logging on after installing the Office for Mac 2011 Service Pack 1.

The update for Office for Mac 2011 is 109MB, while the 2008 update (which will bring that suite up to version 12.3.0) is 333MB. The 2004 update, which brings that suite up to v11.6.4, is 13MB. The updates are graded as Important for all Microsoft Office owners.

Can we have an update for iWork instead?

Seriously, we're still on iWork '09. Not that I'm a big fan of upgrades all the time, but it would be nice if they would update iWork so that I can justify getting the Mac Box Set when 10.7 comes out...
