American Airlines to use Galaxy Tab 10.1 for entertainment

updated 01:50 pm EDT, Mon June 13, 2011

American Airlines premium cabins get Galaxy Tab

Samsung scored an unusual deal with American Airlines to become the platform of choice for its in-air entertainment. About 6,000 Galaxy Tab 10.1 units will take the place of the airline's usual entertainment devices in premium cabins on certain long distance flights in the US as well as to Europe and South America. The models wouldn't be stock and would get "expanded memory" among other changes to fit AA's needs.

The Android 3.1 slates will mostly be found in the US and will show on Boeing 767 flights from New York City's JFK to Los Angeles and San Francisco, as well as flights using the same planes between Miami and Los Angeles. Boston-to-LA flights using 757s will get the treatment, as will 767 flights to Europe and South America.

Timing for the cabin upgrade wasn't made definite beyond the end of the year. Regular home buyers can get the Galaxy Tab 10.1 at Best Buy's Union Square store in New York City today; national availability waits until June 17.

If someone chooses to buy a Windows laptop instead of a Macbook or buys a Blackberry Playbook instead of an iPad, does that mean they hate Apple??

These are big business decisions that are made by people making big $$$. A purchase of 6000 tablets is nothing to sneeze at. They want to make sure they get their money's worth. Android would be the logical choice.

Watch out. 6000 more Drrrrroids taking flight!
