T-Mobile G2 quietly phases out

updated 11:20 pm EDT, Sun June 12, 2011

T-Mobile G2 shows as discontinued in inventory

After being introduced last October as the latest Google phone successor to the T-Mobile G1, the flagship T-Mobile G2 has quietly been phased out just eight months later. As of June 6, it will be off the market. The phone is manufactured by HTC and suffered build quality issues on launch with some users reporting a loose hinge that allowed the slider to release its keyboard to easily. The G2 was one of the first smartphones to arrive on T-Mobile's network with 4G capabilities.

Users are unlikely to have to wait long for an alternative. The new T-Mobile myTouch slide, also manufactured by HTC is coming soon to the network. Although no official release date has yet been announced, it recently made an appearance at the FCC, suggesting that it will soon be inbound.

The myTouch slide, however, is targeted more at the middle to lower end of the market as given away by its low-end 528MHz ARM11-based processor. It has been touted as a likely replacement for the T-Mobile Sidekick. [via TmoNews]
