Spain arrests three over PSN attacks, claims Anonymous hurt

updated 10:20 am EDT, Fri June 10, 2011

Spanish Police arrest three Anonymous hackers

Spanish National Police on Friday said they have made three arrests from what they believe is the Anonymous group of hackers, the New York Times reported. Members of the group are believed to have been responsible for the crippling of Sony's PSN gaming servers and Sony Entertainment Online. One of them is 31-year-old man who was detained in Almeria.

He had a computer server in his apartment in the port city of Gijon, from which the attack originated, Police say. The same computer is said to have been used for cyber attacks against Spanish banks BBVA and Bankia, Italian energy company Enel and government sites in Spain, Egypt, Algeria, Libya, Iran, Chile, Colombia and New Zealand.

Two other suspects were arrested in Barcelona and Valencia, though no details regarding them are released. Police did say that they analyzed more than two million lines of chat logs since October in an attempt to identify the leadership of Anonymous.

The hacker group is made up of people from various countries organized into cells with the same goal. Each operates anonymously but is coordinated.
