Verizon teams up with Payfone on fast web mobile payments

updated 06:10 pm EDT, Fri June 10, 2011

Service available on any browser-equipped phone

Verizon plans to expand the way its wireless subscribers will be able to use their cell phones to make purchases. The company has entered into an agreement with Payfone to bring one-click payment options to its users. The service will be available to any Verizon customer with a browser-equipped mobile phone.

Using the Payfone service, customers can order digital items from participating Internet vendors. Items will be charged to their monthly Verizon bill.

Verizon also participates in Isis, a joint venture with AT&T and T-Mobile for NFC (near Field Communication) cell phone payments. Recently the scope of Isis, scheduled to roll out in 2012, was scaled back. Verizon claims that this new arrangement with Payfone is complimentary rather than a repudiation of Isis.

"We have the gamut covered with mobile payments," said Greg Haller, Verizon's vice president of marketing. "This is one of the big pieces for us to finish that mobile commerce strategy."

The Payfone service will be available to Verizon customers later this year. [via The Wall Street Journal]
