380,000 new MacBook Airs entering production in June

updated 11:45 am EDT, Fri June 10, 2011

Majority should be 11.6-inch models

Apple has placed production orders for 380,000 new-model MacBook Airs this month, Concord Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo tells AppleInsider. The claim is based on industry checks, which also allegedly indicate that about 55 percent of the units will be 11.6-inch systems. The size is believed to be more popular than the alternative 13.3 inches, owing to price differences. Whereas 11.6-inch Airs start at $999, the cheapest 13.3-inch computer is $1,299.

Kuo adds that alongside the new Airs, Apple will be building one last run of 2010-model units, totaling about 80,000. Improvements for 2011 should include a switch to Intel's Sandy Bridge platform, making use of Core i5 and i7 ULV processors. The computers will also likely employ Thunderbolt, a 10Gbps port standard developed in cooperation with Intel. Apple has so far added Thunderbolt to MacBook Pros and iMacs.
