Microsoft cuts price on three WP7 phones to a penny

Promotion aims at gaining market share

Microsoft is trying to generate interest in the Windows Phone 7 platform with a promotion for three high-end handsets, the HTC HD7 from T-Mobile, the HTC Arrive from Sprint, and the HTC Trophy from Verizon. All three smartphones will be available for one cent with a new two year contract. In addition, T-Mobile is waiving activation its fee. The phones also will come with a card redeemable for 4,000 Xbox LIVE points.

Microsoft has struggled to maintain its share of the smartphone market. The company has not released sales figures, but analysts estimate that its partners have shipped only 1.6 million WP7 handsets.

The phones normally sell for $150-$200 with a two-year contract. Full retail value of the handsets without a contract is $469-$499.

Microsoft is offering the deals through third-party wireless dealer Simplexity, LLC. The offer is good until July 2. [via Boy Genius Report]

    not only are these WP7 phones being sold for "free" (just the contract), when you add the value of the XBox Live points, MS is actually paying you to take one!

    and how is Nokia going to make any money selling WP7 phones someday after this?

    WP7 phone dumping has begun

    Now first gen of WP7 phone is outdated they got to sold out their stocks to make place for the next gen. With so many crappy model on the market this cycle will go forever. Someone can tell me which phone of those 3 htc model is the best and why they keep the 2 other model?

    It's not about making money

    What for? Microsoft has these three cash cows to fund all their money losing products. They just sit back and collect while their POS will eventually have enough out there to win marketshare. Good strategy!
