Motorola Android hits Sprint by Photon 4G, Triumph

Motorola brought two Android phones to Sprint at a special event Tuesday by unveiling two flagship phones for both Sprint itself and Virgin. The Photon 4G is Sprint's first international 4G hardware and will talk to GSM networks along with Sprint's CDMA, 3G, and 4G networks. The phone stands as Sprint's first dual-core Tegra 2 hardware and packs a 4.3-inch 540x960 screen along with both a rear eight-megapixel camera and a front VGA camera.

It ships with Android 2.3 out of the box and is likewise the first phone to deliver Sprint ID themes on the new OS. Motorola noted that it's only the second of its smartphones after the Atrix to support the PC-like docking feature, although it doesn't support the Atrix's Lapdock by name. A Photon 4G comes with 16GB of built-in storage and takes microSDHC cards for more.

The Triumph is Motorola's first phone of any kind for Virgin and comes to the contract-free carrier with an unusually high-end layout: it packs a 4.1-inch 480x800 touchscreen, a 1GHz processor, a five-megapixel camera and a front VGA camera. Virgin outfits the Triumph with a new Virgin Mobile Live 2.0 app for Internet radio and on-demand concert streaming. Most of the cost trimming comes from putting just 2GB of built-in memory inside, although it has a microSDHC slot.

Sprint didn't give out pricing or ship dates. It promised the Photon 4G sometime in the summer and that the Triumph would still keep up the no-contract strategy.
