iOS 5 beta hides Facebook, Flickr, LinkedIn, MySpace links

iOS 5 may link to LinkedIn, more beyond Twitter

A further discovery inside the iOS 5 beta has shown that the social network integration runs deeper than just Twitter. Readily accessible settings in the contacts let users add Facebook, Flickr, LinkedIn, and even MySpace. The AllThingsD look showed that users just have to enter a given username and let the OS take care of the outbound links.

The test release is in a rough state, since it produces an unlimited-field bug with MySpace and doesn't show the fields outside of creating the contact. Apple has regularly announced an iOS release with a few features unmentioned or unfinished.

Apple's approach as shown so far wouldn't be as advanced as Synergy in webOS, where services like Facebook or LinkedIn are given some unity. Other platforms, like Windows Phone 7, aren't necessarily as advanced but still take steps such as limiting Facebook integration to contacts the user already has outside of the social network.

The deeper tie-ins would both be atypical for Apple, which until iOS 5 was usually very conservative with any social service deals. It would still see Apple moving in the opposite direction of Google, which pulled automatic Facebook integration in Android as retaliation for Facebook's resistance to sharing member data with Google's search engine.

Hopefully they'll integrate Facebook. I don't care about twitter. It's the stupedist thing I ever saw, I still can't figure it out, nor do I care to. I have Facebook and thats what I use, and I'm getting tired of Apple putting all kinds of support in for Twitshit and nothing for Facebook all of a sudden.

    Facebook...first choice maybe

Facebook was probably Apple's original choice (remember the secret meeting between Steve and the Facebook guy Mark?). I think it didn't turn out well and Twitter is Apple's fallback. This is like Verizon vs. AT&T all over again.
