Vodafone UK scraps 'fat' Galaxy Tab 10.1 for thinner model

updated 11:35 am EDT, Wed June 8, 2011

Opts for newer version more competitive with iPad

Vodafone in the UK has dropped the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1v, its exclusive version of the 10-inch Galaxy tablet, in favor of the newer Galaxy Tab 10.1. The newer version is thinner (8.3mm vs. 10.9mm), but has sacrificed the eight-megapixel camera for a three-megapixel version. Vodafone felt that the 10.1 is more competitive with the 2nd-generation iPad than the 10.1v.

Word of the original exclusive deal between Vodafone and Samsung for the Tab 10.1v was leaked back in August.

Samsung, the Galaxy Tab's manufacturer, was caught off-guard by the iPad 2's 8.8mm footprint and responded with a new, thinner design of its own. Vodafone has chosen to go with this thinner version of the tablet, even though it would mean it would lose exclusivity.

Vodafone has already introduced the the original Tab 10.1v Galaxy to other European countries including Portugal. It is unclear for how long Vodafone will continue to sell this version there before switching over to the newer 10.1 version.
