Apple jumps 26 percent, to 9.7 market share

RescueCom has released its first Computer Reliability Report for 2011. First quarter 2011 results showed Apple gaining market share, surging 26 percent to a 9.7 percent share -- mostly at the expense of Dell Computers. The growing popularity seems to have affected the company's reliability rating, however, as the computer and iOS device-maker fell from second to fourth place for the quarter. RescueCom has ranked Apple consistently at or near the top mark in reliability over years of tracking, and Apple was a close second as recently as the last rated quarter (Q4 2010).

IBM/Lenovo placed first in the rankings, with a score of 254 and 5.5 percent market share. Asus was low on market share, at three percent, but managed second in reliability with a score of 242. Toshiba, with a 10.2 percent share and reliability score of 164, was just ahead of Apple at 149. HP/Compaq dominated the market share score, at 26.5 percent -- but was well behind Apple in reliability, at 122 for a fifth-place finish.

The Samsung brand was not considered in RescueCom's Personal Computer category for market share, but would have landed in third, with a 260 percent growth rate, making the company a possible contender moving forward.

The ratings are based on market share balanced against service calls to RescueCom, a popular emergency repair and upgrade seller. While the use of RescueCom calls for support doesn't directly factor in service and reliability of the manufacturer's own service and support staffs, it does give an indication as to how well the manufacturers are doing, as poor results tend to lead to third-party service calls, such as RescueCom's service.
