Aids in font license policing, management, more

As noted last month, Extensis has now officially upgraded its Universal Type Server font server software to v3, which enables companies to control font usage and enforce font licensing, adds support for Adobe InCopy, introduces "failover" support in case access to the primary Universal Type Server is lost, bolsters auto-activation within Adobe CS products and even helps uses find new fonts or other fonts similar to the ones they are using, among other features.

The program comes in various editions (Lite, Professional and Enterprise) and not all features are available on all versions. The Enterprise edition sprots improved font usage control, allowing administrators to view the number of seats in use for any font and export that data, along with tracking license information for fonts. It also offers seamless server failover for those clients who want to set up a backup server in case of primary server failure, and both the Enterprise and Professional editions can create and enforce font usage policies and enforce font licensing limitations.

All versions now feature the company's QuickMatch technology that quickly allows users to select one font and find all the fonts on the server that are similar in style based on a glyph-level comparison. The new version brings auto-activation plug-ins for both Adobe InCopy and Adobe Photoshop, and likewise the program now offers the ability to clear font caches for Adobe applications, along with Quark Xpress, Microsoft Office and Mac OS X system font caches.

UTS 3 also has "font snapshots," allowing users to create PNG-format preview files of a font choice that can legally be sent for approval, and sports improved duplicate-font management. Administrators can elevate the permissions of specific users in order to distribute admin tasks to trusted employees, as well as manage licenses on the server from a browser-based interface, meaning admins can do this job remotely. Users can quickly create sets of fonts for comparison, sharing or export from any selected fonts, and the program will alert users or admins when incomplete or corrupt fonts have been added to the collection.

The program requires Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later (PPC or Intel), or Windows XP SP3 or later. Upgrades to Universal Type Server 3 from v2, including client upgrades, is now available free for UTS Professional customers under a current service contract. Upgrades from Universal Type Server Lite sell for $698, and the full version sells for $1395. The product is available in English, French and German.
