Robber smashes car into Greensboro Apple Store

updated 11:25 am EDT, Fri June 3, 2011

Suspect flees without taking any goods

The Greensboro Apple Store in North Carolina is closed today following an early-morning robbery attempt, according to local media. A call to police was made at about 4:43AM, after a dark gray Honda intentionally plowed through the store's glass facade. Photos (below) show a cracked glass panel thrown to the floor and scattered debris.

Police note that despite the effort taken, the suspect fled the scene without stealing anything. The person is officially described as a white male wearing a white shirt and a hooded mask, although a security guard quoted by 107.5 KZL claims the suspect was wearing a white ninja suit. The car was reported stolen at about 6AM today.

Apple has encountered increasing problems with its decision to use glass facades at retail. The stores have been hit by a growing number of robberies, many of which are smash-and-grabs in which the thieves quickly escape. One incident in March resulted in a security guard killing a thief during a firefight.

can it get any worst than this? It's safer to work for bank than Apple Store these days. Apple Store needs to install missile to vehicles warhead.

    hate crime

Since he didn't actually steal anything, I assume the guy really hates glass facades.

Remember folks, you can hate glass facades, but if you steal a car and go smashing through the front of an apple store - you've acted on your feelings, in an inappropriate way.

They shouldn't have to remove the glass facade, strategically placed car barriers could be an answer. They do this in front of government buildings already. Just huge concrete sculptures - they don't look too bad, in fact, they look artsy - but the real reason they are there, is to stop cars.

    Best Buy

Car barriers (and truck)--steel posts embedded in concrete are in front of the local Best Buy--no doubt cameras too. Ruins the aesthetics for sure. Maybe Apple will have to stay open 24/7...LOL.

I suspect the police will figure out a way to nab these turkeys, but nothing is cheap. Probably done on a dare, or the guy was hammered. In any case, an idiot.

    Was the car stolen??

If he didn't take anything, you have to wonder if he was drunk and had just parked it there for no good reason. The police might want to talk to the owner of the car and check and see if he matches the description of the hapless thief. It may have taken him over an hour to walk home and report his car stolen.

    Two words

    Gorilla Glass (or transparent aluminum)

That'll been the "one more thing" at the WWDC, they will annouce a new unbreakable transparent material for shop windows (explaining their liquid metal licensing from a couple years ago).

    White Ninja

The real problem in Greensboro is all the white ninjas running around. In most suburbs, a white ninja would look out of place, but in Greensboro, there are just too many to count. Now if this guy had been dressed as Darth Vader, maybe someone would have been able to point him out and say, "There he is! That's the guy right there!"

Good thing Paul Blart: Mall Cop, was there. Otherwise, who knows what the white ninja would have run off with.
