Sonos Play3 revealed early by FCC filing
Sonos' plans for a smaller, self-contained alternative to the ZonePlayer S5 were given away Thursday by an FCC filing. Likely to be called the Play:3, the system appears intended for a nightstand or just for those who can't justify the $400 price of an S5. The box looks to have three separate drivers and still support Ethernet along with wireless pairing to a ZoneBridge.
Exact plans for when the new Sonos box would ship weren't clear. A confidentiality request attached to the filing is asking for the manual, device photos, and other data to be kept secret for 180 days after authorization and would put the new box's arrival at the very end of the year. Given that test configuration photos are visible, it's possible the Play:3 will be available sometime earlier than the end-of-year target implied by the FCC.
Sonos' motivation for a smaller device is likely not just for cost but also for changing service, which now focuses more on Internet streaming as well as AirPlay sharing. In the past day it added both Aupeo's mood-themed radio streaming and Stitcher's podcast-focused service. [via Zatz Not Funny]
