iCloud logo pops up on WWDC 2011 banner

updated 03:35 pm EDT, Thu June 2, 2011

iCloud logo sighted on WWDC ahead of venue

A small clue as to Apple's iCloud plans at WWDC surfaced Thursday after Twitter's creative director Doug Bowman sighted one of the banners. A peek inside Moscone West showed an icon with a MobileMe-like cloud but a brushed metal, iOS-style icon reinforcing the likely very strong mobile focus. The banner appeared to be deliberately short on details and simply mentioned something about "WWDC 2011" above the mention of iCloud itself.

Extra photos taken by AppleInsider also showed the logo along with a mock math equation that showed Lion, iOS 5, and iCloud equalling WWDC. The imagery for the first two has already been seen in the past and didn't reveal anything new outside of the iCloud logo.

Most now expect iCloud to be a major reworking of MobileMe. It may still have e-mail, calendars, and other syncing features, but it may also have a cloud-based music service that could song match and stream a music collection to any iTunes install or iOS device without having to upload it. Some or all of the service may be free, and talk has existed of Lion getting many free features.

    Interesting logo and banner style

That iCloud button is extremely metallic, almost as if they want it to easily mimic a button that will be added to their keyboards or maybe the top view of new hardware like the next generation of AirPort hubs?

And I know it's a geeky developer conference, but the equation metaphor on the WWDC signage seems overly geeky for Apple, no?
