PlayStation Store, Qriocity to come back by end of the week

Sony vows all PSN services due for most by weekend

Sony told gamers early Tuesday that most countries would have nearly all their PlayStation Network service back by the end of the week. The additions would include the PlayStation Store as well as in-game DLC, Media Go sharing, and the Music Unlimited side of the Qriocity music service. Video on Demand and non-PlayStation Qriocity music were due to get details later.

The restoration didn't involve Hong Kong, Japan, and South Korea, which already got the core multiplayer gaming and communication features back this weekend. Officials in Japan have been seeking assurances that services would be secure once they came back. Sony has been promising "considerable security enhancements" as well as ongoing testing of the payment system.

Sony hasn't yet said when it will start handing out the free games it promised as compensation for the more than three weeks long PSN outage.

The revival comes at the last minute for Sony, which is about to go into the E3 gaming show having suffered the worst hacking incident in its history. It both lost the trust of gamers who had been surprised the hack was possible as well as paid at least $171 million to cover the losses. No financial information is known to have been stolen, but the account compromise led to mandatory password changes and free identity theft protection as safeguards.
